Do dogs have to be on leash in public spaces? 

Leash laws are generally set by each town, city, or county. Dog owners are responsible for knowing the leash ordinances in their area. 

In Clark County, dogs must be on-leash and under the owner’s control, except when in designated off-leash dog parks. 

In Reno and the rest of Washoe County, dogs must be on a leash no longer than six feet while in parks. In the congested areas of the county, dogs must be contained and restrained at all times except in designated off-leash areas.

Are dog bites covered by insurance? 

In most cases, dog bites are covered by renters’ or homeowners’ insurance policies. The dog owner’s insurance should pay for bite victims’ medical expenses up to the liability limit, subject to exclusions. After the limit has been reached, the owner of the dog may be responsible for additional damages.

When is a dog owner responsible for a dog bite attack? 

Nevada law does not have a specific state dog bite statute. This means it generally follows the “one bite rule.”  

This means that dog owners are not automatically liable the first time their dog bites someone. After a dog has bitten someone once, however, it may be  considered either “dangerous” or “vicious.” 

A dangerous dog is one that has behaved menacingly to people twice in 18 months while off-leash or at-large without being provoked or threatened. Owners of dangerous dogs must be vigilant about leashing, containing, and maintaining insurance coverage for their dog. 

Vicious dogs are dogs that have continued to behave menacingly after being classified as dangerous, or those that have caused substantial bodily harm or death to a human.
